Technology experts have warned that the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud technologies is exposing Ugandan organisations to growing cybersecurity threats, even as businesses accelerate their digital transformation efforts.
The warning was issued by Euniah Nyandieka, Country Manager for NTT DATA Uganda and Rwanda, who said organisations must strengthen their cybersecurity systems as they embrace emerging technologies.
“The cybersecurity threat is very big, but it has a solution,” Nyandieka said. “As organisations adopt AI, they become more exposed to cybercrime, and cybercriminals are also using AI to target systems and steal data.”
She made the remarks during the launch of NTT DATA’s expanded operations in Uganda following the integration of Dimension Data into the global technology company.
Nyandieka said AI is increasingly helping businesses improve efficiency, automate processes and enhance decision-making across sectors, including banking, telecommunications and public service delivery.
She noted that financial institutions are already using AI-powered tools to detect and prevent fraud before significant losses occur.
“Artificial intelligence has come to help us, not to steal our jobs. It enables organisations to become more efficient and achieve better outcomes,” she said.
However, she cautioned that increased reliance on AI and cloud-based systems requires greater investment in cybersecurity, data protection and modern digital infrastructure.
According to Nyandieka, many traditional networks and legacy systems are not adequately equipped to support advanced technologies such as AI, cloud computing and modern cybersecurity solutions.
“As more organisations move to AI, their data is stored in the cloud, and that information must be secured. Innovation and cybersecurity must move together,” she said.
She added that NTT DATA plans to work with organisations in the financial, telecommunications and public sectors to develop secure digital transformation strategies and promote wider adoption of AI technologies.
Nyandieka also urged internet users to exercise greater caution online, warning that cybercriminals often target unsuspecting individuals through malicious links, scams and attempts to steal personal information.
“People need to think twice before clicking on links and sharing personal information online. Data is one of the most valuable assets today, and protecting it is everyone’s responsibility,” she said.
Despite the cybersecurity challenges, Nyandieka said Uganda’s digital economy presents significant opportunities in the coming years, with AI expected to drive innovation, improve service delivery and increase efficiency across multiple sectors.
